Is a self-cleaning litter box worth it?
Costs, cat behavior and what to expect from the Litter-Robot 4.

Self-cleaning litter boxes are the most popular household robot after robot vacuums, and for good reason: scooping is a twice-daily chore that’s easy to fall behind on.
What it does
After a cat leaves, the Litter-Robot 4 waits, then rotates to sift clumps into a sealed drawer underneath. You empty the drawer instead of scooping. Whisker rates it for up to four cats of 3 to 25 lb, and it costs $699 from Whisker.[1]
The real costs
- Up front: $699, versus a few dollars for a plastic box.
- Ongoing: clumping litter and drawer liners.
- Savings: fresher litter often means you use less of it, because waste comes out promptly.
Will your cat use it?
Most cats adapt, but not instantly. Set it up next to the old box, run it in manual mode at first, then switch to automatic once your cat is using it reliably. Very small kittens and very large cats may fall outside the weight range.[1]
Who should skip it
Single-cat households where you’re home and happy to scoop won’t save much. If you travel, have several cats, or have trouble bending down, it can be one of the best home-robot purchases you can make.
